The History of Boy Scout Troop 312

One of the oldest troops in the United States

Some of our earliest records are missing, due to the fact there was no Boy Scout's council in Jackson. We do know that we were established as Troop 5, on June 14, 1911.

The troop's number was changed from Troop 5 to Troop 12 around 1914, and in 1957 is was changed again to Troop 312. The troop has had three different sponsors: 1911 through 1917 it was sponsored by "A Group of Citizens". 1918 through 1922 by the First Presbyterian Church: 1923 through 1924 by "A Group of Citizens". 1925 through 1937 the First Presbyterian Church again sponsored us. The Jackson Lion's Club sponsored 1938 through 1945; and the First Presbyterian Church again took the sponsorship from 1946 to the present.

In addition to its traditional Scouting Program, Troop 12 supported an Explorer Post from 1950 to 1952.

We have had 29 different Scoutmasters up to the present day, many serving several years. We have had over 60 different Assistant Scoutmasters, many of them going on to be the scoutmaster later.

The Troop (312) has seen 68 Scouts earn Scouting's highest rank, that of Eagle Scout. In 1922, the first Eagle Scouts were Clarence Kilgallin, Stuart E. Tracy, and Russell Jacks.

Our first council was called the Land O'Lakes Council. We are now a part of Great Sauk Trail Council, the district of Chief Lenape Trails.

Some of our adventures have taken us across America. In the last 10 years we have canoed in the lakes and rivers of Michigan, Minnesota, and Canada; biked in Wisconsin, Maine, Virginia, and Pennsylvania; and backpacked in the Great Smokey Mountains, Isle Royale National Park, and at the Philmont Scout Ranch, as well as throughout our own state. This year has several of our scouts attending the national Jamboree. The portion of the troop not attending will be high adventuring by backpacking a portion of the Appalachian Trail and become a day visitor to the National Jamboree.

Hundreds of advancements and thousands of merit badges have been earned by Troop 312 scouts. We have participated in a variety of service programs ranging from community assistance to environmental projects. We've supported the Liberty Loan Bond program, Voter Registration day, Red Cross campaigns and most recently several improvement projects at the Dahlem Environmental Center in Jackson.

We are proud to have been a part of Boy Scouts of America for over 90 years
